Brief// Website development for an environmental protection group in Snow Camp, North Carolina

Background/ Snow Camp Community Action Network is an environmental organisation that was set up to preserve the community and environment by stopping uncontrolled development – particularly destructive and polluting Class III Heavy Industry.

The organisation does this through community outreach and mobilisation, and in engaging their neighbours in raising their collective voices in order to reach and influence policymakers at all levels of government.

Challenge/ The organisation already had an existing website which was developed through volunteers. Lack of experience and skill in setting this up had led to a poorly functioning tool, with domain registration, hosting and choice of platform being spread across multiple channels which was extremely unpractical to maintain. The internal structure of the site was messy, and it didn’t communicate the organisations key messages well.

Solution/ moving the site away from the limiting and costly WordPress.com respectively Squarespace environments, and rebuilding it as a self-hosted WordPress website. By consolidating hosting and domain registration from 2 different suppliers into one, both administration requirements and overall cost were reduced significantly.

Putting clear structure into the exisiting content helped organise this better. Identifying key messages and making these more prominent along with raising the visual appeal helped increase the effectiveness of the overall communication.

Design templates were set up in the back end to enable anyone to publish new content in a consistent way, which is very useful in an organisation that heavily relies on volunteers.

The result is a simple but sharp website that communicates effectively and gets the key messages out.
